Using Sauna for
Treating Lyme Disease
New research is proving traditional and infrared sauna help our bodies deal with Lyme disease.
About Sauna treatment
How sauna treatment helps Lyme Disease
In honor of Lyme Disease Awareness month we are looking to spread the word on using sauna to treat this disease. Used as an additional tool to other treatments sauna has been shown to help our bodies recover from this debilitating disease.
Experts agree that the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which is the cause of Lyme disease, causes a buildup of toxins in the body. While there are several detoxification pathways in our bodies this unusual buildup causes issues with at least a few of them. Sweating in the sauna has been shown to eliminate many fat-soluable toxins from the body (which include heavy metals). The heat from the sauna is debilitating for the parasite, and while it will not get rid of it altogether it can provide long term relief.
An additional problem with Lyme Disease is soreness and pain, especially in the muscles. Saunas provide relief from this as well by relaxing joints and muscles. Atheletes often use sauna to reduce soreness in their muscles.
Infrared saunas are particularly good at penetrating deeper into our tissues at lower temperatures than traditional saunas. This means that for many people who dislike extreme heat this is a better therapy option. THe additional advantage of infrared saunas are the lower cost and less space requirements than traditional outdoor saunas.
“When detoxing your body from Lyme neurotoxins and environmental toxins, you can give your liver and kidneys a break by eliminating some of those toxins through your skin with sauna therapy.”

How Sauna benefits Lyme Disease
Removal of toxins and heavy metals
As saunas raise your core temperature they release toxins kept in our fat-soluable cells and are released throught the skin instead of damagins our organs.
Sleep Quality
Saunas have been shown to increase sleep quality and improve sleep onset.
Pain Releif
Saunas naturally ease the pain in our joints and muscles. By reducing soreness on nerve endings and alleviating muscle spasms a sauna session is a natural path to healing.
Cognition
Brain function is aided by regular sauna sessions. BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) is boosted through sauna heat and diseases such as Alzheimer’s are shown to be prevented through sauna use.
Depression
In clinical trials saunas have been shown to help alleviate depression often associated with Lyme Disease
Aids Treatment
Through improved circulation and removal of toxins, sauna treatment helps medication reach parts of your body more efficiently.
