Tony Robbins and Sauna

Tony Robbins has a bit of a cult following to say the least. Love him or not you can’t say he has not been a consistent figure in the self help movement for decades. It is also impossible to deny that Robbins is anything but the picture of health and energy despite nearing the age of 60. He still goes onstage for up to sixteen hours at a time displaying high energy and vitality to massive crowds. Tony Robbins has been a lifestyle and health hacker since before it became trendy and ubiquitous.

Daily morning sauna use has been such a fixture in his routine that he has saunas (with cold pools) installed in all seven of his homes. His routine involves a vigorous workout followed by an equally vigorous sauna and cold pool session. Billy Beck III is the full-time personal trainer to Tony Robbins and has been the one who recommended the practice of daily sauna as an extension to Tony Robbins workout for cardio reasons. He told Business Insider he finds it “improves circulation and wakes your ass up.” Rather than a long relaxing sauna session he prefers a short very hot sauna of 100 F or slightly hotter.

The combination of the higher heat sauna and the cold water plunge is pretty typical in places with strong sauna culture such as Finland and South Korea.  There is also a lot of evidence to back up the benefits of ending a workout with a sauna session and then a cold plunge.  The sauna use increases the Growth Hormone from the workout, protects against free-radical damage after a heavy workout, and aid in muscle regrowth.  The cold plunge  When working out we create muscle but also free-radicals in the process and saunas help protect us from this.  The cold plunge does more than wake us up.  It compounds the positive results of the workout and sauna session.

“[Sauna] improves circulation and wakes your ass up.”
