Throughout his legendary career that earned him 28 Olympic medals, Michael Phelps was known for his extraordinary training regimen. While much attention has focused on his famous 12,000-calorie diet and six-hours-a-day, six-days-a-week pool sessions, heat conditioning, including sauna use, played a significant role in his preparation for major competitions.
Training Environment
Phelps and his long-time coach Bob Bowman specifically chose the North Baltimore Aquatic Club for part of his training because the facility lacked air conditioning. The hot, humid environment was deliberately maintained to simulate the conditions Phelps would face in international competitions, particularly the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The combination of intense physical training in elevated temperatures helped Phelps develop his remarkable stamina and heat adaptation capabilities. This approach aligned with research showing that heat acclimation can improve athletic performance, even in normal temperature conditions.
Heat Chamber and Sauna Sessions
As part of his preparation for the Beijing Olympics, Phelps incorporated heat chamber training into his routine. These controlled environmental chambers, similar to saunas, helped him adapt to the hot, humid conditions he would face in China. This strategic use of heat exposure extended beyond mere comfort – it was a calculated part of his performance optimization.
The U.S. Olympic team’s training facilities included both traditional and infrared saunas, which athletes like Phelps used as part of their recovery and adaptation protocols.
